Needs Analysis
Introduction
A needs analysis was prepared for William (case study) and through this identified the circumstances in which further training is required and where potential gaps occur in William’s current skills set. We established criteria to help determine the most reasonable type of further education required to meet William’s needs by assessing advantages and disadvantages of different learning methods, his learning style, how he can integrate into an adult learning atmosphere, and the time he is willing to commit to a training program. The strategy plan included the use of Blooms Taxonomy of Learning (Big Dog and Little Dog's Performance Juxtaposition, 1999) to further the effectiveness of Williams learning goals including his knowledge, attitude, and skills.
Identified Problem Need
William has been looking for work in his field for a long time and is having no success. He feels like it would be a good time to make a change however he is uncomfortable with thought of attending school at his age. He has been in a position of authority for many years and is uncertain how he feels about having someone tell him what to do and how to do it.
Identify potential skills gap
William is a very good oral communicator and does not have any concerns about his writing ability as his position entailed writing a number of reports and presentations. However he does not like public speaking and really would prefer to work on his own. All of his reports and presentations were hand written and provided to someone else to type.
Set Objectives
The objective here is to deal with any adult learning issues and/or challenges that William has and to recommend suitable teacher strategies to address these. Create the perfect learning plan for William where he will be able to find suitable employment where he has the appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful.
Criteria
The criteria used to determine the needs, comes directly from the Case Study.
Assess Challenges
His preferred learning style is more individual than group work. Therefore distance education would be a suitable learning environment for William.
He tends not to use Word, this seems to be a common barrier in adult learning because of the lack of need or exposure to this technology as a reflection of his age and the type of work he performed daily. A program that would provide a Word course at an intermediate level would be suggested.
He needs to be motivated and decrease the learning barriers he may face by:

He needs to be motivated and decrease the learning barriers he may face by:
- Consistently connecting his learning to his goals;
- Remove barriers by providing a learning environment that is a more hands on approach to assist him in his goals;
- New skill practice / development
- Sensitivity to criticism
